Before you select a fertilizer, determine your lawn needs. Then select a fertilizer containing the necessary elements to accomplish your goals.
- Lawns generally use more Nitrogen than other
elements. Your lawn will use the Nitrogen to strengthen its root system and increase the top growth’s health and color. For a healthy and established law, a fertilizer high in Nitrogen is used during the early growth season.
- If you’re starting a new lawn, healthy roots are more important than top growth. The top growth can be tended to after a healthy root system is established. In this case, a high level of Phosphate (P) is recommended. Your lawn will use Phosphate for the roots and to increase reproduction in turf grasses.
- If you live in a cold or dry climate, or an area with plant diseases or insects, you want your lawn to be
hardy. It needs to be healthy enough to survive in hostile environments or against natural elements. A high Potassium (K) fertilizer is recommended. Your lawn uses the Potassium to resist disease, parasite attacks, and sustain itself in cold, heat, or drought conditions.
You should also decide if you need a liquid or dry fertilizer.
- Plants absorb all materials in liquid
form. Your lawn will quickly absorb a liquid fertilizer and get an instant boost of nutrients. However, your lawn will use up a liquid fertilizer quickly. More frequent applications are needed.
- Dry fertilizers break down slowly and are absorbed by your lawn at a slow, steady rate. You won’t need to apply dry fertilizers as often, but you won’t see the effects as quickly.
- Some lawn fertilizers also contain insecticides and herbicides to help control pests and weeds. Determine if you need this type of control before using a fertilizer containing these chemicals.

All Florida Brand 6-6-6 is an all-purpose plant food specifically formulated for Florida’s lawn and gardens. The equal amounts of Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium help strengthen top growth and the root system, while fortifying the plant against diseases, insects, and harsh climate conditions. All Florida Brand 6-6-6 is available in a forty-pound bag.
8-8-8 is a granular fertilizer. Its fast-acting pellets are easy and convenient to use.
