We played a vital part in growing the state's
agricultural business.
Sunniland:
- Helped pioneer the development of sweet
corn production in Florida.
- Helped increase the 1940's celery and
sugar cane production in Zellwood and Belle
Glade.
During this time, the State of Florida
began to change. The population increased.
Residential areas were built on former farm
properties. Less land was available for crops.
Sunniland had faithfully served its community -
the citrus and vegetable growers - for over 50
years. Now that its community had changed,
Sunniland refocused its business to residential
lawn and garden supplies.
In 1954, Sunniland gained its first major
account: Sears and Company. Through Sears,
Sunniland was able to focus a greater portion of
its business towards the residential market.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the business
emphasis was placed even more on wholesale
building materials and chemical-fertilizers. By
1978, vegetable production, citrus production
and sales from these commodities had been phased
out almost completely.
